posticon Favorite scene in Day of the Dead

My favorite scene in Day of the Dead is a scene that by most people goes unnoticed while watching the film. It is the start of the beginning of the end for the survivors in the underground base.
It starts about a third of the way through the film. We see all of the survivors of the base sitting down at their tables. Rhodes is having a lengthy discussion with Dr Logan about the creatures, Rhodes talks about how Theyre dead, Theyre !@#$ dead. And you want to teach em tricks! Logan has his hands clamped together sitting down as though he doesnt care what Rhodes is saying. You then hear soft ambience in sound over Logans speech, he says something like They must be rewarded, this ambience goes louder and then that scene splits, we then witness one of the zombie traps close. Rhodes men are catching more zombies for Dr Logan. All hell breaks loose when one of the zombies goes loose; this culminates in the deaths of three of Rhodes men and Miquel being bitten by a zombie.
I also think the scene where Bub finds Logans body is very powerful; again Romeros use of that ambience proves very effective, and it was nice to see Bub getting his revenge on Rhodes. emoticon
I think thats the best scene in the whole film, you have a lot emotion from Dr Logan, which I think is powerful stuff, it gets me every time..I have to watch that scene like 5-6 times - Its amazing. I also find that the music played a vital part in that scene, creating an atmosphere that plays on the viewers emotions.
Any thoughts?
So then, whats your favorite scene?

Re: Favorite scene in Day of the Dead

When Logan says 'they must be rewarded' and the scene cuts to the soldiers getting zombies from the pins is called a 'shock cut' in the screenplay, right? I think this is a great example of Romero being influenced by news media, because the transition is as blunt as that on TV news shows. Almost all Romero films make use of either TV news or radio talk-shows. I believe he has used this in all of his best films to advance the narrative if only in emotional terms(of course, radio and tv news sequences in Dawn depict various officials casually discussing what to do about the zombies which gives us incite into what the ultimate fate of the world might be, while all we see is an empty mall).

In the scene from Day I just mentioned, discussion is followed by video footage of the action. It is interesting that the zombie-gathering proves Rhodes' point about keeping zombies around the base. Romero uses this flow between the scientist's side, Rhodes' side, and the group at the gate to make us see something important-that the research, as important as it is, can't continue much longer. The scientists will not stop, and we don't want them to.

That Romero shock cut should be used more often; it made Day better is some ways. Before and after the shock cut - Before everything was okay, and after the shock cut everything begins to breakdown. You may be interested that after the shock cut a piece of John Harrison's music called Breakdown.
Anyways, I think it's good that you agree with me on the scene being important and the best in the film.
The shock cut used in that sequence hits the viewer every time and excels the film into new heights. It'll take a few views of the film to see why that scene is important to any normal "non-fan" of Romero's Day of the Dead. What pisses me off is that at the time critics didn't notice these important scenes in the film such as the shock cut, and in-turn saying that the film was bad, how untrue that is. Roger Avary, he noticed how important elements such as the shock cut work, he ended up writing Pulp Fiction..that's saying something.

The sad truth is that the shock cut, while progressing the story in a contrasting way, looks like bad editing. I can attest to the fact that the shock cut was in the script and not the result of irresponsible handling of film or any other idiocy. The transition isn't entirely abrupt, though. The music begins as Logan speaks, but it seems Romero didn't leave any room between Dr. Logan's lines and the next scene. This is another point where I think an extra second of breathing time would help, and it would give the music some space.

Remember the scene in Dawn where Roger and Peter run over to the second-floor balcony and look down at the zombies? I think it might be Goblin's best moment of the film, but the whole scene seems too short. Romero cut the whole thing out of the theatrical version, and the music wasn't used anywhere else in the film. This scene is why I wanted to see a Dawn remake that is closer to the original; that I might get to see the scene expanded by a few seconds. Maybe there is a version of the film more like that.....

Dude, that scene is nice because it gives the characters a chance to explain their points of view. John says he wants to start over, but I wonder if he means to rebuild society or simply have sex with Sara. In the context of this film, what we may call an admirable goal(starting a new society) is inappropriate. I think John explains it all in this scene. Still, I don't care for it much. John should have had more screen-time before this scene to establish himself as a more serious individual.

So nobody like the scene where Bub tried to talk?

(likely answer to your last question-his island accent)

I don't see why Lori Cardille had to have top-billing, though she is a huge Hollywood star(I hope lightning doesn't strike me).

If only Bub, still holding his chains, had said, "it's a madhouse...a madhouse!!"
