Coming Soon-More Zombies

Dawn of the Dead is set for U.S. release in March 2004. Also, a Resident Evil sequel and TWO Return of the Living Dead sequels are in the works. I am suspicious that the Return sequels might miss theatrical release, and be shown on the Sci-Fi channel instead. With all of these films being made, will Hollywood notice and decide to make a few mainstream zombie films?

It's good to hear zombie movies will come, but I don't think they will be as good as the classics from the 70s and 80s.

I wonder if any other zombie films are being made. Probability dictates that of ten movies, one might be good. My question is this: what happens when Hollywood producers believe that zombie movies are popular? I predict that there will be 10 or more zombie films in U.S. theaters between now and 2005.

Which kind of horror movies are popular at thos time? Slasher were popular in the 80s and I think ghost movies were popular in the 90s but which kind of horror movies are now popular?

Re: Coming Soon-More Zombies

I do not think producers have been able to identify what audiences want, because there hasn't been many horror releases in 2003. Most notable in the year 2003 is the release of Freddy VS Jason and TCM remake.

'The Blair Witch Project' and the Sixth Sense were the big ghost movies of the 90s. The Sixth Sense was simply a good ghost story. The Blair Witch Project was very dark and simple; this film will influence many horror films, such as Cabin Fever(which I will watch later this week). 2000-2010 may be the time of the zombie films, but I believe there will be a few slasher films, ghost stories, and creature features. There will be slasher films with good story, and a few franchise films(such as Freddy, Friday the 13th, and TCM). A creature film can be released anytime because these films have appealed to wide audiences in the past, so these films are not affected by the phases of the horror genre. In terms of general horror, we could compare the year 2004 to 1984, which was the middle of a period in which many horror films were being released. In terms of zombie movies, year 2004 is 1978, which is the beginning of a new cycle of films(appropriately beginning again with Dawn of the Dead).

the more zombies the better, but hollywood turns them into action flicks, with [sign in to see URL] horror part just gets lost.

Deadwiz, you are absolute right. I think the filmmakers have to start out with a better concept than "let's show some zombies, dude!" Don't misunderstand me-I love to see zombies, but let's see a bit of thought put into the making of these films. I also think that videogames are influencing the movies, and, oddly enough, the games are delving into horror more so than recent horror films.

Who knows-the movie industry might wake up one day and realize that horror films should scare people. Zombies aren't mere fodder for target practice.

Sounds like you've seen House of the Dead. "Let's go kill some zombies with our big guns and karate!" It's interesting, though, because there was actually big guns and karate in Dawn. There was a moment when Peter and Steven were loading-up on guns and ammo-they seemed happy to set about killing the zombies, but it was quite different when they got to doing this. They weren't happy while killing zombies and they weren't happy afterward. It's all in the subtext. Romero manages to do a lot with the mall, the zombies and four unknown actors. Dawn just seems to break open the human condition and, dare I say, Romero didn't aim the film at a teen audience.

BTW: By mentioning the teen audience, I am not getting into the Resident Evil debate as of yet. I'll simply note that what I've seen of the games has definite horror value and would work for an audience of more than teens.

Shaun sounds like a good film. Unfortunately, I'll probably have to wait for the DVD.
